The South Side Science Festival

Vayda is obsessed with Dr. Pimple Popper, that’s her girl. If you have a weird bump or a rash Vayda will give a solid shot at diagnosing you and baby don’t let you have a lipoma or a large cyst, she is in heaven. She is fascinated by all things medicine and science so when she stood at the South Side Science Festival (hosted by the University of Chicago), reached out her hands, and held that  pig’s heart I could see the joy beaming off of her-instant infinite aura points. I wish I was that giddy about something, anything actually lol.

Zaccai listened to Zo’s heartbeat

We go to lots of STEM events but we’d never been to one like this. This Festival had  over 100 hands on demonstrations, so many activities, games, and visuals, and a lot of merch. All the giveaways my kids received were spilling out of my Wonderfold by the time we were walking to the car. At end of the festival I wanted to go to medical school! Here are just a few of the things my kids experienced at the festival.

Zaccai and Zo were able to control AI robots using voice commands and moving their bodies.

Zaniel, my 11 year old who will start a random science project at 11 o’clock at night had the chance to use dry ice and learn how it works. He later told me he stuck his finger in the dry ice to see how it felt even after knowing how it works and what I could do to his finger-I cannot!

Zion learned the basics of CPR and I learned that mouth to mouth is no longer necessary when performing CPR.

Zion learned all about CPR

All of my kids except baby Zen learned how to use a stethoscope and they all listened to each other’s heartbeat.

They made wayyyy too much slime. It got all over my Wagon.

They looked through giant telescopes- the babies struggled to look through just one eye lol.

They were able to speak to real scientists, professionals and students and receive instant feedback.

They did all of these things and so much more and now this festival is one that we cannot ever miss.

Check out the video for some of the highlights of the event below.

Last year was the first time we attended the Southside Science Festival at University of Chicago. These clips are a small glimpse of the STEM activities my kids were exposed to. I’m constantly on the hunt for youth programs and activities in the Chicagoland area, it’s honestly a passion of mine. So far this year my kids have built an app with a college program, taken culinary classes, taken sewing classes, taken metal casting classes and attended an athletic shoe design class with a Detroit college. I have many more plans for them this year and I’m excited to share them with you all. A lot of you have reached out to me asking how you can have your kids attend programs like these so I’ve decided to create an exclusive private group. If you’re interested in joining the group just let me know below and I’ll send you the link. #southsidefestival #Chicago #chicagotiktok #uchicago #chicago
