6 Tips For Raising Confident Kids

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Ivory. The opinions and text are all mine.

When I was growing up, I was an awkward, gangly little thing. I was extremely insecure, shy and I had low self-esteem. I think that if I had been more confident, I would’ve taken more opportunities, learned my self-worth earlier and perhaps been more successful. I look at my kids, and I know that I never want them to experience the negative feelings I had as a child, and I try my best to ensure that they are confident and always live up to their highest potential.

I won’t be able to protect them from everything (even though I try) but early in my journey of motherhood, I pledged that I would do “the most” when it came to making sure I raised confident kids so that they would quickly recognize their greatness. Here are 6 things I do to ensure that I raise confident kids.

Teach Them That They Have Control

Whether it is bedwetting on stuttering, don’t make them feel ashamed of challenges that are common or uncommon. There was a period where Zion was stuttering when I noticed that it was becoming more and more frequent I began to get a little worried, and I’d see his frustration when it happened. Instead of bringing negative attention to it or showing my sadness I made him take deep breaths and repeat his sentence. I did this for months, soon I saw him taking deep breaths on his own when he was talking, and before I knew it, he had completely stopped stuttering. I’m not exactly sure why he stopped, but I’d like to think that teaching him that he had control over the situation made him more confident in conquering his challenge.

Call Them Something Besides Their Name

In a good way of course. I rarely remember being called beautiful or pretty as a child and when I was, I was  straight up shocked. In addition to calling my kids their regular names, I call them, handsome (for the boys), beautiful, pretty, pretty face, etc. I do this daily; I remember telling my aunt that I call them these names so much that they believe them to be their names. She didn’t believe me, so I let her follow me into a crowded room where Zion was playing when I called to him “Handsome?” He looked up to me. She thought I was crazy, but it proved my point. Vayda is so confident that when I spruce myself up she says “Mommy you look pretty like me!” Mission accomplished.

Let Them Dress Themselves

I’ll be honest this has been the hardest task for me especially when it comes to Vayda. My household went through a phase where getting dressed in the morning was horribly stressful for all of us. Zion is going through a phase where he refuses to wear “soft pants” instead he only wants to wear jeans. Vayda is currently wearing everything in her closet together. I couldn’t understand why they just wouldn’t wear what I laid out for them, but it wasn’t until Vayda’s teacher told me that children have better days at school when they wear what they want to wear. That’s has been some of the best advice I’ve ever received. I finally got over myself, and now let them wear whatever they want. Zion is no longer forced to wear soft pants, and Vayda is living her dream of wearing every element of fashion at all times, yesterday she wore a pink sundress, leggings, one striped leg warmer on her left arm, a hooded sweatshirt and pink sparkly sneakers to daycare. I now have no issues with what they wear no matter how crazy it looks and mornings are a lot smoother in my house.

Don’t Ever Criticize Their Looks

And don’t allow others to. This is probably the most demeaning thing I’ve seen parents do to their children and I know first-hand how small it can make you feel. Don’t ever make fun of or negatively point out their physical attributes. Shaming or embarrassing a child does awful things to their self-esteem.

Listen to Them

Vayda wants to be a “Unicorn Doctor” and she will tell anyone who will listen. Highly unlikely but who am I to judge? I always try to encourage their dreams no matter how far-fetched or unrealistic, whenever I see a unicorn or anything that has to do with a doctor I make sure to point it out to her so that she knows that I listen to her.

Let Them Explore

This was also a hard thing for me to do. I’m pretty much hover mom, and I’m always concerned about them hurting themselves, getting dirty or touching something gross. I’ve been using Ivory Original Bar Soap to give my little explorers a gentle clean when they touch something gross -because they always do. Ivory has been around since before I was born and it’s just as gentle as I remember it also still smells like clouds from heaven. My kids are super sensitive to everything, and Ivory is free of dyes and heavy perfumes, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin and it still delivers a gentle clean. I trust it for my family because Ivory’s products are 99.44% pure and clean.

In addition to Ivory being an oldie but goodie that I can trust my kids were amazed when they realized the bars float like their rubber ducky, just wait until I show them that Ivory not only smells like clouds but it can actually turn into clouds when you microwave it, where’s my mom of the year award?

Of the three, my Unicorn Doctor does the most exploring, she will pick up anything (animals included) she once tried to pick up a snake! I can chase away wild animals but bugs are a bit more tricky, when she does get bug bites I soothe the itching with Ivory.

That’s a great idea! I always struggle with the activities because we move so much but since we’re finally stationary for a while I’ve signed the little ones up for tumbling and Zion up for basketball, soccer and football camp so I really feel like I’m winning lol
