Confession. I neglect myself, much more than I’m willing to admit and after I looked in the mirror, and realized I didn’t recognize myself six months ago I vowed to start taking better care of me. Before kids and marriage, I had so much time to do things that made me feel and look good. I would take hour long baths with candles and soft music, and my friends would clown me and say I was dating myself, but I didn’t care because I felt great and in return I looked great.
When I vowed to start taking better care of myself there were a few things I started doing that changed me for the better so if you struggle with making time to care for yourself here are some tips to add or help you establish a self-care routine.
Finding time to be active outside of household chores was a struggle for me. I live in the boonies, and the nearest gym is at least an hour from me, so I’ve recently started getting my exercise in an unconventional way. I’ve started playing my son’s dance video games, and I’ve been getting more exercise than I could’ve imagined, and I’m having fun doing it. At least twice a week, I dance my soul out on the living room floor. I’d eventually like to incorporate a more mature form of exercise like Yoga or Pilates but until then video games it is.
We don’t give water enough credit. Water is so vital to our bodies’ health and beauty wise I try to make a conscious effort to drink more of it. I tend to shy away from sodas, and I only drink juice occasionally except when I’m on vacation, anything goes on vacation because it doesn’t count (I think). Outside of that I pretty much only drink water. If I’m trying to slim down for an upcoming event, I cut out all juice and drink a gallon of water each day. When I do that I instantly start to see results not to mention the bonus of brighter skin, so it’s a win-win. If you don’t have a daily water minimum intake, you should.
This is probably what I miss most about my pre-mommy/wife life. I don’t do nearly as much pampering to myself as I used to because pampering takes time at least good pampering does, and there is no such thing as extra time when you are a mommy. Even though I can no longer get a weekly mani-pedi, there are a few things that I’ve started doing that give me my pamper fix. One of them is buying subscription boxes. Subscription boxes are possibly the most amazing thing in the world. If you’re not familiar with subscription boxes, a subscription box is a package of products delivered right to your mailbox monthly. Kind of like a magazine but with products. There are all sorts of subscription boxes out there makeup, nail polish, skincare, organic there is pretty much something for everyone. I just received a vegan body scrub and soy candle with the most amazing aroma in my subscription box. Another way is to make an appointment to get away and stick to it. I’ve started doing that for nail and hair appointments I put it on the calendar, and I stick to it. Come hell or high water my nail polish will be popping, and my hair will be cute.
In the past, I never really understood the hype surrounding meditation. I believed meditation was silly but after a period of feeling so unfulfilled I decided to give it a try. It has made a huge difference in my life, each morning I get up and meditate on my goals for my life and for that day when I’m done I feel rejuvenated and light. Since I’ve started meditating, I’ve noticed that I feel complete at the end of each. On the days that I don’t meditate, I feel out of whack, so I try to make meditation a part of my daily routine. If you feel skeptical about meditation check out this meditation video I found on YouTube; it’s short and to the point.
Music is the outlet for the soul. I can’t sing a lick but each morning after I drop my kids off at school I cruise down the road belting out songs that make my heart squeal. I sound horrible; I really do, but it makes me sooooo happy. If a driver in another car has never laughed at you for singing at a stop light, you are missing out on life. Lately, I’ve been having full-fledged concerts to Rihanna’s Anti album and this past week I discovered Maxwell’s Lake by the Ocean, and I am in love.
Supplements are how I ensure that my body gets everything I need when I’m busy or forgetful which is often. I’ve been taking youtheory® Turmeric Extra Strength 120 Capsules that I picked up from Costco and they support healthy skin, joints and provide antioxidant properties.
The old formula consisted of 450mg of turmeric per 3 tablets, but now the new formula with the orange-labeled top contains 1,000mg of turmeric per 2 capsules. youtheory turmeric capsules now contain 3x the amount of turmeric per capsule. The capsules are also vegan and allergy-friendly which is perfect for me because I’m sensitive to just about everything. Supplements are a great way for me to keep my body balanced internally, so this has been a big boost to my routine.
Is there anything on this list that is part of your self-care routine? What else should I add to mine?
